At Boynton Primary, children are taught the basic fundamentals of writing so they can communicate their thoughts and ideas across all subjects. We encourage writing from nursery onwards beginning with mark making progressing to Year 6 who produce high quality work across a variety of genres. We encourage pupils to enjoy developing and expanding their vocabulary by using high quality texts to model writing on. We have a structured approach to the genres taught to ensure all varieties are covered over a two year rolling programme. Pupils are taught to identify key features of  texts developing a success criteria for their own work with grammar sessions linked to the genre focused on each half term.

Pupils develop their writing each half term through a variety of modelled writing sessions, group and independent work, peer and adult led marking and editing. This then culminates in an assessed piece of writing.

Writing is assessed against the schools I can statements or for Years 2, 5 and 6 against statutory requirements.

Improving and editing
Improving and editing work is a really important skill that we encourage children to develop throughout their time at Boynton Primary. After a piece of work has been completed, children should be checking that they have spelt keywords correctly before handing it in to their teacher. For larger pieces of writing, children are given time to independently check their work, making necessary spelling and punctuation corrections but also to edit their work. By editing, children are improving the content by up-levelling word choices or changing sentence structure and punctuation to create more impact on the reader. We encourage that children continue to do this at home when completing homework activities. Sometimes, children will sit together and help edit and improve each other's work. Children enjoy taking on board the 'teacher' role and offering feedback; it is also really beneficial for them in spotting, explaining and correcting mistakes.
It is also beneficial for children to check their punctuation and spellings before returning any home based work to school.
Handwriting
At Boynton Primary, we use cursive handwriting. This is a style of writing where letters are joined together in a flowing manner. This allows children to be able to write more fluently and it makes it easier to write at speed. During handwriting practice, children will be taught how to write, form and join letters accurately and will be reminded and encouraged to do this in all lessons.
