The curriculum at Boynton Primary School.  The Intent, Implementation and Impact of Religious Education.

Intent

At Boynton, we aim to provide an inspiring and meaningful curriculum that will help children develop an understanding of the place that religion plays in people’s lives.  The aim of Religious Education is to help children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour; develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance our spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.  We believe that R.E. should be taught in an inclusive and tolerant environment which promotes discussion, develops empathy and a greater understanding of British Values within the society we live in.

Implementation

We follow the Agreed Syllabus for the East Riding of Yorkshire and the following religions have been selected for study:

Christianity

Islam

Judaism

Hinduism

Sikhism

Buddhism

As Christianity is the predominant religion in the school's pupil population and in the community surrounding the school, Christianity is the chosen faith for Progressed Study.

We teach RE for an hour a week. This may be taught discretely or linked to other subjects such as PSHCE. Topic days linked to the school’s values of ‘Understanding Other Cultures’ enhance the learning of RE. The school also has strong links with the local church. The whole school celebrates festivals such as Harvest, Christingle, Christmas and Easter with the local church and community.

There are no presumptions made as to the religious backgrounds and beliefs and values of the children and the staff.  We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others freely.  All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity and we value links between home, school and a faith community.  We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children.

Impact

The children at Boynton enjoy learning about the faiths and beliefs of others and why people choose, or not choose to follow a religion. Through Religious Education, we are able to make links between our own lives and those of others in our community and in the wider world.  R.E. offers our children the means by which to understand how others choose to live and to understand why they choose to live that way and therefore, is invaluable in an ever changing world.
