The Curriculum at Boynton Primary School. The Intent, implementation and impact of our curriculum- History

Intent

At Boynton we aim to provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum ensuring all pupils have access to the topics covered. We fulfil the requirements of the national curriculum equipping pupils with knowledge about their local history, the history of Britain and how it has been influenced by the wider world like ancient civilisations and empires; changes in living memory and beyond living memory; learn about the lives of significant people of the past; understand the methods of historical enquiry and be able to ask and answer questions. We want children to enjoy and love learning about history, developing enquiring minds in a supportive environment. We intend to develop this not just through classroom experiences but also through fieldwork, educational visits and celebrating historical landmarks within the local and wider community, threading British Values throughout.

Implementation

In ensuring high standards of teaching we aim to develop pupils who question in different ways and aspire to learn and develop. History is taught through a two year cycle as detailed in our school long term planning. We develop key historical skills and knowledge interrogating texts and evidence, building upon these each year as detailed in our curriculum progression sheets. We believe History should be embedded in the curriculum by teaching this through as many other subject areas as possible and learning from the achievements and follies of mankind. We tie learning to any relevant current affairs and strive to give pupils a multi- sensory curriculum. We believe reading and vocabulary development are key skills to learning and development in this and all areas.

Impact

Children will know more, understand more and remember more about History. They will reach age appropriate expectations and retain historical knowledge through skills taught through a variety of subjects and mediums. We will know this from questioning them on skills they have developed; work scrutiny and the animated way pupils discuss and celebrate historical topics within school.
